A few weeks ago, I interviewed my 14-year daughter and shared some of her favorite vacations and more importantly why they were so memorable for her. Man, I wish I had done this exercise sooner, it really helped me understand what is important to her and teens these days - hint, it's not just a cool destination. ✈️🏝️🏔️
Now it's time to share feedback from my 16-year son.
- Maui, HI
- Despite living in So Cal we had not traveled to Hawaii as a family until last spring break. Part of the reason it tops his list is exploring someplace new and maybe some FOMO. 🤣 He had heard from "everyone" about how pretty it is, and they were not wrong!
- He loved the crystal-clear water for snorkeling. We saw tons of sea turtles and brightly colored fish right off the beach. Grabbing snorkel gear and walking into the ocean was more his speed than signing up for a guided tour. I loved that our VRBO provided tons of beach gear and enough snorkel equipment for our entire family - a great convenience and savings. 🤑
- A number of evenings we chose to cook and eat by the pool. He highlighted these chill evenings hanging out in the jacuzzi, chatting with Dad while he barbecued, and watching the sunset.
- Maui was perfect for our first island visit but Eli mentioned a couple of things he would do differently on our next trip 1) He wants a proper bed instead of sleeping on a sofa bed - fair request! (I decided to forgo an additional bedroom for a place with lots of open space and ocean views, lesson learned.) and 2) A location that has more teenagers on vacation - there was a ton of young families with toddlers by the pool. They were cute, but I get it, not exactly what teens are looking for.
2. Siesta Key, FL
- The walkability factor was a big win for this beach town. Being able to stroll 2 blocks down to the main strip for food and shopping gave him some independence and freedom from the multi-generational family gatherings.
- The house we rented was amazing for outdoor fun. It had a beautiful pool, family-sized jacuzzi attached, and this insane rock grotto with waterfall and slide. The entire family enjoyed a break from the beach here and late-night swimming together after dinner.
- This one surprised me a tad, he mentioned the upscale lunch he joined with the adults. I'm not sure it was the company though; he really seems to enjoy trying new foods. I'm not upset if he turns into a foodie, like his mama. 💕
3. Plymouth, MA
- All I have to say here, besides the darling lake house settled on a kettle pond (am I the only who had never heard of kettle pond?) is this was the week he had his best friend with him. Everything is better with your bestie by your side!!!
Talk to your teens, ask them about their favorite vacation memories, and use this when planning future trips. A little convo can go a long way in making your next family travel even better!
